Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small child when her father, who worked as the carnival barker, passed away. The mother of the family had to take on jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in high school. The school she attended within two years of her education in order to pursue acting as a profession. This was not an easy path to pursue. While she was offered a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. The following job she got was a "hat check" woman at a nightclub but she quit and moved back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make enough money as an usherette throughout the day, and working at night in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
